I know that many of you know Robin Brenner, the YA Librarian at Brookline Public Library, from the great anime and manga workshops she’s done for us in the past. Robin was asked recently to be a judge for the Eisner Awards, also known as the “Oscars of Comics” — how cool is that?!
According to the Eisner Awards website, “The finalists on the ballot are selected by a blue-ribbon committee that considers thousands of entries submitted by publishers and creators. The nominees are then voted on by all parts of the comic book industry: writers, artists, and other creators; publishers; editors; and retailers and distributors.” Robin and the other members of the judging panel will be selecting the finalists, which will be up for voting. WOW! Congratulations to Robin, way to go!!

The Turn Beauty Inside Out Leadership Retreat for tweens and teens, ages 11-16 is coming up in June in New York City. The event website says it’s for boys or girls, and parents, chaperones, mentors and other youth professionals. I’m not sure how leadership fits in, since they explain that they cover topics like popular media influence, healthy body image and self-esteem, but it might be something your teens are interested in. Take a look!

There’s an article on the YPulse blog about Guitar Hero, a game that many of our teen patrons are playing. It’s described as a cross between Simon (remember that game? It was round, with flashing lights that you had to press in a pattern.) and Dance Dance Revolution, but you use a controller that looks like a guitar. MTV has just purchased it, so expect some cool uses of it in the coming days! You can read about it here.

I just read about a YouTube contest at Denver Public Library, on the LibraryStuff blog. Teens create a video using the theme “How I Have Fun at the Library” and upload it to YouTube. They notify the library and they’re entered! A few rules apply, and the creator of the winning entry gets a Creative Zen MP3 player.
